Nutrition

According to The National Cancer Institute, approximately one-third of all cancer related deaths may be diet related. We recognize the significance of diet as it pertains to your recovery, and we will counsel you on those foods that will help fight your cancer and help you to recover. We know the power of ingesting antioxidants and phytochemicals to boost your immune system.

We will recommend the foods that have been proven to have the nutrients that you need for your particular type of cancer. For example, we understand the importance of a high fiber and low fat diet in the control and remission of colon cancer. Years of observation and research have proven that the lowest incidence of colon cancer is found in countries where meat is scarce and plant foods fill the menu.

We know that fiber moves food more quickly through the intestines, helping to eliminate carcinogens. The best sources of fiber are foods that are closest to their natural state, unrefined and unpeeled such as beans, peas, whole grains, lentils, vegetables and fruits.

Each cancer is different and the foods that are recommended for patients will vary depending upon the type of cancer.

Exercise

Did you know that exercise reduces stress levels, enhances abilities to perform activities of daily living (ADLs), and potentially boosts your immune system? Our experience shows that moderate exercise allows the organ systems to positively adapt and improve metabolic efficiency; therefore, producing fewer side effects and better rest/sleep patterns.

We will counsel you on allowing your body time to heal and only suggest the exercises that our staff believes are right for you. We know that survivors often feel more lethargic during certain points of their chemotherapy and/or radiation cycles. This is very normal and indicates that the body and the cancer are being affected by treatment. We are conservative when determining the time, type and intensity of any exercise activity and encourage you to be good to yourself. We will plan an exercise program that will be safe for you, while improving your quality of life.

Stress Management

According to a study published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology, a self-administered stress management training program did a better job of helping patients cope with the adverse effects of cancer treatment than a one-on-one approach with a mental health professional.

The Cancer Center of Sarasota-Manatee is fully aware of the importance of stress management as a component of your ongoing treatment. As a You-Centric treatment provider we will design a program that will help you in dealing with stress, anxiety and any depression that you may experience throughout your care.
