Steven Mamus, M.D. featured in ABC 7’s MySuncoast Health segment, “New diseases caused by smoking are officially added to the list”

Steven Mamus, MD, nationally-renowned medical oncologist with more than two decades of expertise in the treatment of cancer and blood related disorders, was featured in the ABC 7 MySuncoast Health segment, “New diseases caused by smoking are officially added to the list” on Friday, January 17,2014.

Dr. Mamus founded the Cancer Center of Sarasota in 2006 in order to bring personal, patient-centered care blended with university-based medical expertise to cancer patients in the Sarasota area.

ABC 7’s Alix Redmonde spoke with Dr. Mamus about a new report from the Surgeon General’s office which names additional diseases and cancers caused by cigarette smoking.

The new report from the surgeon general suggests a link between colon cancer and tobacco use and Suncoast Oncologist Steven Mamus of Cancer Center Sarasota Manatee said this is only one of the new findings.

“There’s been association with vascular disease, coronary artery disease, stroke.” said Dr. Mamus.

Liver cancer is now included on the report and can be added to other cancers caused by smoking.  Mamus said, “Head and neck cancer, esophageal cancer, kidney cancer, and there’s a potential link with AML among others.  Type-2 diabetes, Rheumatoid arthritis, Erectile Dysfunction and Macular Degeneration are also new entries.

But, there is good news for those that quit early, said Dr. Mamus. “If you stop smoking before the age of thirty and you completely stop then there’s almost no increased risk of long term morbidity or mortality from smoking.”

Dr. Mamus is board certified in Medical Oncology, Hematology, and Internal Medicine and is a member of the American Medical Association, Florida Medical Association, American Society of Hematology and the American Society of Clinical Oncology.
