Lung Cancer Treatment

Keytruda Cleared by FDA for First-Line Lung Cancer Treatment: Information for Residents of Sarasota, FL

Lung Cancer Treatment Sarasota FLKeytruda, an immunotherapy drug from Merck & Co., is now an approved form of lung cancer treatment for previously untreated patients. The Food & Drug Administration (FDA) cleared the drug for use two months ahead of its set schedule.

Immunotherapy works by leveraging the patient’s own immune system to attack cancer cells. Keytruda “takes the brakes off” the immune system and has shown great promise in select patients as a primary form of treatment for metastatic non-small cell lung cancer. The patients tested had high levels of the protein PD-L1 – a factor that increases receptiveness to immunotherapy – although the drug may also be effective for patients with lower levels of this protein.

In addition to lung cancer patients, individuals with melanoma, Hodgkin lymphoma, bladder cancer, kidney cancer, and head and neck cancers may be candidates for immunotherapy.
